Dan Maurin, Owner
ASE Certified Master Technician
I grew up in the Tacoma/Parkland area of Washington and got my start in the automotive repair field at 16 working for a Tacoma Subaru Dealership after school auto detailing and accessorizing. I then moved on to doing pre-delivery inspections on new cars, being given increasing responsibilities and began attending Subaru Technical Classes. In 1981, after graduating from Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma I began working full time at the Subaru dealership as a Certified Technician.
In 1982 the dealership was sold and our new owners relocated and expanded the business, increasing the number of staff from five to thirty. With the growth came experience, schooling and certifications that a smaller dealership could not afford. I was promoted to service advisor but soon realized this was taking me away from the hands on work I loved doing. By 1990 I was a Subaru Master Technician and ASE Certified Master Technician, but soon left the dealership looking for the personalized, one-to-one service I enjoyed at the smaller dealership. I went to work for a Subaru only independent repair facility in Tacoma where I was the Technician and Service Manager. One of the most enjoyable aspects of my job there was the day to day interaction with my customers. The small scale of the shop allowed me to get to know each customer and their car on an individual basis so that they never felt like just a number.
In the Spring of 2003 the owner of the shop decided to retire and sold the business. At that point I was faced with making a decision about my future: I could either return to the dealership or do what I had always dreamed of and use my experience to build a first rate independent Subaru shop. Not wanting to return to the impersonal atmosphere of a dealership I chose to strike out on my own and open ROOpair Specialties in May 2003.
ASE Advanced Level Technician
Ben was born and raised in Tacoma, Washington and graduated from Stadium High School in 1974. After high school Ben enrolled at Bates Technical College in Tacoma to train as an automotive technician. Ben graduated from Bates in 1976 and went to work for a national service chain starting out as a technician and advanced to become a service manager.
In 1987 Ben decided he wanted to take his skills into a new area by specializing exclusively in import auto repair. He found the opportunity he was looking for at a Subaru dealership here in Pierce County. He entered the dealership as a used car service technician and became friends with Dan who was employed as a technician. Ben advanced through the certification process, earning his ASE Master Technician status in 1989 and Advanced Level ASE in 1993. In 1994 he earned the highest honor as a Subaru Senior Master Technician.
That same year Ben was offered a job at an independent Subaru repair shop in Tacoma where he had worked 4 years earlier. During the next nine years, Ben gained a high level of expertise in Subaru diagnostics and troubleshooting, which he now brings to ROOpair Specialties.
Josh Long stepped into the Service Manager position at Roopair in February of 2009. He comes to us with a wealth of Subaru experience. Josh has been working on motorcycles and bicycles since the late 80’s. He graduated to Subaru’s in 1997. In 2000 he took on the crew chief role for a private Subaru pro rally team, maintaining the car at events around the USA. He has continued to polish his skills, doing turbo Subaru engine management tuning.

Brian Anderson joined the ROOpair team in May of 2006, while still attending Tech school. He became an ASE certified technician in August 2007. Shortly after leaving school he came to work here. Brian had spent many years living and working at Crystal Mountain. This gave him the opportunity to enjoy the value, and harsh weather performance Subaru’s have to offer.
